ROBERT L. VANN MEDIA AWARDS
The Pittsburgh Black Media Federation is calling for its 37th annual Robert L. Vann Media Awards.
The awards will recognize journalism excellence in coverage of African American and African diaspora communities, individuals and issues via print, broadcast, multimedia, visual presentation, and digital media categories in Western Pennsylvania, Western and Central Ohio and parts of West Virginia. Also, the student contest honors excellence in journalism at colleges and universities in Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Washington, D.C., and West Virginia.
All contest entries must have been published or broadcast in 2025.
The submission period is starting soon!
Finalists for the professional contest will be announced in the spring and winners will be named at an awards dinner/ceremony on May 28, 2026, at 6 pm at Lawrence Hall, Point Park University.
The professional contest will be judged by seasoned journalists and media educators outside the states of Pennsylvania, Ohio and West Virginia. PBMF reserves the right to recategorize entries.

THE PURPOSE
The Robert L. Vann regional awards competition, sponsored by the Pittsburgh Black Media Federation, recognizes excellence in coverage of the African American and African diaspora communities.
The annual Vann program helps support PBMF initiatives such as college scholarships for graduates of PBMF’s Frank Bolden Urban Multimedia Workshop for teens, professional development events for PBMF members and community service projects.

ENTRY RULES
All professional entries must have been published or broadcast between January 1, 2025, and December 31, 2025, in Western Pennsylvania, Western and Central Ohio and parts of West Virginia.

MEMBERSHIP DISCOUNT:
Members of the Pittsburgh Black Media Federation pay a discounted rate. To qualify for the discounted rate, at least one person who is the principal author or creator in the production of the entry and is being credited for the work must be a member of the Pittsburgh Black Media Federation.

Award entries should be listed from the member(s) of the production team most responsible for the entry (i.e. reporter, producers, writers, editors, sound engineers).

- Digital presentation (could be the presentation of a photojournalist’s weaving together multiple images, perhaps with sound or music, to tell one specific story; or the presentation of a layout of a webpage for a specific story or project. An organization’s overall website is not eligible.)
- If possible, please link photo entries to PDFs or to photography as published on an original media platform.
ELIGIBILITY
PROFESSIONAL CONTEST ELIGIBILITY:The professional contest is open to any professional or freelance communicator. Vann’s professional contest presents awards for excellent coverage of African American and African diaspora communities, individuals, and issues. The submitted work must be in print, broadcast, multimedia, visual presentation, or digital media for outlets in Western Pennsylvania, Western and Central Ohio and parts of West Virginia.
PROFESSIONAL ENTRY FEE: $45 for PBMF Members ($55 for Non-Members)
NUMBER OF ENTRIES: There is no limit to the number of entries an individual may submit per subcategory. In the column category, the three examples submitted count as a single entry. In the editorial column, three editorials constitute a single entry.
FORMAT: Entries must be submitted in the following formats: PDF, TEXT, DOC, JPG, PNG, GIF, and URL links. Entrants are encouraged to keep the file sizes to 5MB or smaller to aid in judges opening attachments for review. URL addresses must link to work completed and published, broadcast in 2024. The URL must be complete and accurate, otherwise the entry will be disqualified. It is the responsibility of the person submitting the entry to make sure that all passwords are provided to access entries. If passwords do not work to provide access beyond firewalls, an entry is disqualified.
PAYMENT: The professional entry fee is $45 for PBMF members and $55 for non-members. Entry fees must be paid online at the time of entering. Entries will not be accepted without accompanying payment. Payment for multiple entries from one organization can be made in one transaction.
To qualify for the discounted member rate, at least one person who is the principal author or creator in the production of the entry and is being credited for the work must be a member of PBMF. Membership will be verified.
JUDGING: Materials submitted will be judged outside of the region by nationally recognized professional journalists or media educators. One award will be given in each subcategory. The decision of the judges will be final, including the option that judges elect not to give an award in any category. PBMF reserves the right to recategorize entries.
DEADLINE: The entry deadline is 11:59 p.m. Saturday, February 28th.
